A diary can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s another word for a planner, a place where people can write their schedule, appointments, and to do lists.

For others, it’s another word for a journal, where people can write about what happened during their day and often however they’re feeling. This is the definition of a diary that I personally think of whenever I hear the word, and it’s this one that I want to explore the history of today.

Diaries in History

Diaries are far from a new invention. They’ve been around for centuries in various forms, and they come from all different cultures. The Diary of Memer is a papyrus written in ancient Egypt for example and is the oldest known papyrus. However, there are diaries from all over the world, and all of them give us valuable information about what life was like in the time and place in which they were written.

So, the next time you’re writing in your own diary, you might be thinking that you’re just writing for yourself, and you are. But in the future, who knows what value your diary and ones like it might bring.
